Thanks, Bryce Wiatrak, this is the most comprehensive rundown on Muscats I have seen so far in the past 60 years of burning curiosity.

I'm so enthusiastic I joined the Guild just so I could thank you. The entire site is a joy to behold and will be very useful as I deepen my understanding of the world of wine.

Excellent article! However, regarding:

To my knowledge, La Rioja was not long (if ever) under Moorish rule. Unless if by region you mean Spain as a whole. La Reconquista was a centuries long process that culminated in the 1492 surrender of Granada, the last muslim kingdom in the Iberian peninsula.

Wonderful and illuminating essay. Question though. In the text above it states the following: 'The vines in the Côte Blonde are planted in soils with a greater limestone content, offering softer, more delicate Syrah, often with a contribution of Viognier. Just south, Côte Brune’s Syrahs are darker, more muscular, and grounded in iron-rich schist—qualities amplified in La Landonne, which is found on the Brune side.' Is the 'just south' reference with regard to the Côte Brune a typo? Doesn't the Côte Brune lie to the north of the Côte Blonde?

Thank you for a wonderfully informative article. I am conflicted about addition of subzone labeling on Chianti Classico. On one hand, Im worried that it can further complicated things for the end consumer. On the other hand, I’ve recently had some extremely elegant and perfumed examples of Chianti Classico from high elevation vineyards in Lamole and Casole that have broadened my understanding about the possible dynamic range of styles for Chianti Classico. Had it not been for the mention of “Lamole” on each bottle (one from producer I Fabbri and one from Le Masse) I might not have made the connection of this style to a particular place/subzone of Chianti Classico.

Thank you for sharing Bryce. Excellent article with some good MW study facts. In the past, I used Cartizze for my WSET L3 classes, it was hard to compared it with other wines, as we had to taste Cava, Champagne and New World sparkling in the same flight. While it is delicious and clearly a step up from the wider Prosecco DOC, not one student said they would pay $40 for it. Makes me think about commercial potential and you are absolutely right, it is a hand-sell.
