This is funny. I had a few friends over for dinner the other night, and we watched Sideways while drinking some great right bank wines. One of my friends is a wonderful sommelier, but she admitted she'd never seen the film. At the end she was.....noticeably perturbed. She said, "That's it???! That 2 second speech killed Merlot?" She was pissed.

I deal with a lot of these issues with the Italian Merlot I sell from Trinoro. People love it until I tell them what’s in the bottle!

I've definitely seen a younger generation of wine drinkers who don't balk at Merlot: at most they have some sense that they should shun the grape but always like it when they actually taste it.

One thing I've noticed is that in the same way that Merlot should not be vinified like Cabernet Sauvignon, it also should not be aged like Cabernet, and that's an issue that at times has plagued the wine industry here in Washington, and in California too I would imagine. Where Cabernet can typically take more new oak and heavier toast levels, Merlot can not, and once winemakers came to realize that, I think the quality has greatly improved.
